Front Bumper removal for a Ph2 Clio 172/182

Front Bumper removal for a Ph2 Clio 172/182

Several jobs on the 172/182 are either facilitated by or made easier by the removal of the front bumper, so its something you may as well get used to doing.

The main way in which the bumper is held on is by two friction fit connections, one to either front wing, but before we can undo these, we first need to undo some fastenings which attach the bumper to other bits.

1) There are two clips holding the upper grill to the slam panel, these are in the corners near the lights, they unscrew and then pop out.

2) There are 2 bolts holding the bumper to the front undertray section, these are access fron underneath the bumper near to the centre

3) There are screws holding the archliners to the bumper, each side there is on at the bottom access from underneath, and one further up accessed by turning the wheel onto full lock
4) There are two bolts holding the bumper upto the wing, once the arch liners are loose you can access these more easily with the wheel turned

5) Once all the fastenings have been removed, you need to pull outwards on the bumper where it clicks into the wing to release the friction fit connections, to do this pull the back top of the bumper out towards the side, you will have to REALLY pull it, it feels like something is going to break as you are doing it, it scares everyone the first time, double check you have the arch liner and top bolts removed if you think its too solid just in case, but it does take a lot of effort, as you pull it out bear in mind its natural reaction will be to spring back to where it was, so you need to be careful not to let it hit the wing.
After you have done one side, remember that when you do the other side the bumper will then come off totally, so don’t let it fall forwards onto the floor and damage your paint, in an ideal world its a two person job as its far easier to do both sides at once.

6) As the bumper comes away, there are two pipes that feed the headlight washers (not present on cup models) and there is a wiring harness for the foglights, these need to be disconnected to allow you to move the bumper away from the car, but if you are doing a job like the belts that just needs access to the drivers side (UK) then you can leave these connected and just swing the bumper round out the way.

And then once the bumper is off, its 4 13mm bolts on the slam panel at the top and two that are at the front (not obvious to spot, follow the front upper brace downwards to see them in front of the radiator) if you wish to remove the slam panel too for additional access
